Abstract
In an online setting, project-based learning (PBL) becomes a promising
alternative teaching pedagogy that provides an enriched learning environment in
order to inculcate creative and critical thinking, communication and
collaborative learning skills in young learners. Combined with
computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) approach, communication among
distributed learners is mediated through computer network and the web-based
instruction. The synergy emerging from this combination assures a powerful
platform for young learners to make contacts from various networks of inquirers
thus widening the opportunity to celebrate diversity and differing cultures.
This paper presents an experimental framework for establishing and monitoring
an online social network for secondary school students to collaboratively work
on the project activities in the community of practice dealing with
sustainability issues. Students from different nations around the Asia Pacific
region will have an opportunity to share their views and exchange information
on the basis of their shared responsibility to the global issues in order to
create a more sustainable future. The initial groundwork and the main purpose
of the study as well as the experimental model will be discussed.
